Bridging the Gap: Media Education Society Calls for Faith-Based Leaders to Champion Media Literacy in Their Ministries
ORLANDO, Fla. — April 19, 2025 — The Media Education Society is calling on faith-based leaders across traditions to recognize the urgent need for media literacy as part of their pastoral and educational outreach. Because media is shaping public values and behavior more than ever, the organization encourages clergy, educators and ministry professionals to become advocates for media engagement that promotes truth, compassion and the common good.
“As faith leaders, we can no longer afford to be silent about the role media plays in shaping our communities,” said Dr. Rose Lugo, founder of the Media Education Society. “Media literacy is not a secular concern—it is a spiritual one.”
The Society, a lay apostolate and public charity, is developing resources to help faith-based leaders incorporate media education into their ministries. These tools will guide communities in analyzing the messages they consume and in creating content that reflects moral clarity and social responsibility.
Lugo’s work draws on more than two decades of media experience and academic research focused on the intersection of Catholic social teaching and media education. Her approach is designed to serve multilingual audiences, with materials in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Leaders interested in learning more or supporting the initiative can sign up for updates and announcements ahead of the Society’s upcoming website launch.
